An Invitation to Read “The Smell of Rain on Dust: Grief and Praise”, Together

Since the end of 2015, I have sent out an Invitation each week to folks both near and far, to join me in reading a beautifully written and powerful book – The Smell of Rain on Dust: Grief and Praise, written by Martin Prechtel. I have had the deep honor to attend Martin’s school, Bolad’s Kitchen, and although I am not currently enrolled, I continue to learn from this gifted teacher. Studying with Martín has brought me myriad gifts – one of the most precious being that my heart becomes both more tender and more fierce. The book has the same effect – each reading opens me up a little further. With this opening comes another opportunity to shed a new crop of tears – of gratitude or grief or joy or sorrow – always the gift of more tears. The book is small, yet fiercely alive; filled with beauty and truth.

Each week I send out an Invitation. I never know what I am going to write and am always amazed at what comes. Over these many months, I continue to hear how touched people are by this little weekly note, and there are some who have taken to joining us in spirit, by reading together in their own home.

I have decided to share these Invitations, and, to begin at the beginning. Please join us as we read this delicious book – you are always welcome.

PS If you would like to read the book, but do not have the means to purchase it, check with your public library. If they don’t have it, submit a request – they are looking for good suggestions!
